Hello,

Holbrook Mahn has been involved in education for over 50 years, divided evenly between high school and higher education at the University of New Mexico.

His central focus has been teaching English as Second Language for students and their teachers, with a focus on Second Language Literacy. For the past 25 years he has studied the work of Lev S. Vygotsky, who focused on the role that language played in the development of consciousness in both child development and in the human species.

For 20 years, Mahn has written extensively about Vygotsky’s work and taught a doctoral-level Vygotsky Seminar, videos from which are included on this site. The theoretical and methodological approach developed by Marx & Engels provided a foundation for both Vygotsky’s and Mahn’s work.

In his analysis of Vygotsky’s work, Mahn has focused revealing the essence of his central concepts, which have been obfuscated by Stalin’s Soviet bureaucracy, and then applying them to educational practice.
